These pages are very representative of the early days of comic sections, before comics took over completely. Where the 19th century saw pages of magazine reprints, here we start to see new comics and features mixed with reprints. Eventually the original material would completely supplant the repurposed stuff, though these mixed feature pages would persevere for many years. These pages are especially well supplied with cartoons by William F. Marriner, one of the most distinctive artists of the era, with his round-headed Glad Rags the tramp character featuring in many of his cartoons.

As is the case for so much humor from the turn-of-the-(last)-century, there are most definitely outdated racial and social depictions in these strips.
