Opper's other famed creation, beside Happy Hooligan, is Alphonse and Gaston, the adventures of a pair of ostentatiously obsequious Frenchmen. Alphonse and Gaston are two men who are hamstrung by manners and correctness, fops who can't dodge a trolley as they bow and scrape to one another, "After you, my dear Alphonse," says one, and, "No, I insist, after you, my dear Gaston," says the other. Of course, the trolley mows them down while they fawn.
