I'm not sure what I've been waiting for, perhaps the chance to research this one a little bit more (I haven't found much of anything yet) or some spare time to clean up more panels for the archive (not likely with the state my copies are in), but I'm here now to tell you the wait is over: Soldier Speerens, U.S.A. is officially reporting for duty. Speerens is a Walter Hoban creation who bears a bit of a resemblance to Hoban's most famous character, Jerry. The setting is World War I and not surprisingly the humor is of a much less zany variety than Jerry. I'm not sure how long this was around, from what I've seen the panels I've posted appear to be some of the last in its run, which only makes sense considering the War to End All Wars was pretty much wrapped up by the time these hit the paper. If I'm not mistaken, Jerry too spent some time in uniform during WWI; I wonder if the two ever met on the comics page?
